庆元府鄞县人，字广微。袁燮子。少承家学，又受业于杨简。宁宗嘉定七年进士。为秘书省正字，奏称内外局势可惧，请严守帅之选，兴屯田之利。迁校书郎，又言边事之病在内不在外。历任监司及州府官，所至兴利除弊。入为中书舍人，屡奏边事当以上流为急，议和恐误事。累官至权兵部尚书、兼吏部尚书。卒谥正肃。有《蒙斋集》等。
