译文
黄鸟黄鸟你听着，不要落在楮树上，不要啄我粟米粮。这个地方的人们，如今拒绝把我养。还是回去快回去，返回亲爱的故乡。
黄鸟黄鸟你听着，不要落在桑树上，不要啄我红高粱。这个地方的人们，信义对他没法讲。还是回去快回去，回到兄弟的身旁。
黄鸟黄鸟你听着，不要落在柞树上，不要啄食我黍粱。这个地方的人们，不可和睦相来往。还是回去快回去，回到叔伯的身旁。
注释
黄鸟：黄雀，喜吃粮食。
榖（gǔ）：树名，即楮树。
粟：谷子，去糠叫小米。
谷：养育。“不我肯谷”即“不肯谷我”。
言：语助词，无实义。旋：通“还”，回归。
复：返回，回去。邦族：邦国家族。
粱：粟类。
明：“盟”之假借字。这里有信用、结盟之意。
诸兄：邦族中诸位同辈。
栩（xǔ）：柞树。
黍（shǔ）：古代专指一种子实叫黍子的一年生草本植物。叶线形，子实淡黄色，去皮后称黄米。
与处：共处，相处。
诸父：族中长辈，即伯、叔之总称。

小雅·黄鸟创作背景
此诗与《小雅·我行其野》，前人多以为出自同时，是周宣王末年礼崩乐坏、社会风气恶化的表现。旧说如《毛诗序》谓诗旨为“刺宣王”，毛传云“（周）宣王之末，天下室家离散，妃匹相去，有不以礼者”。现代学者多赞同朱熹的观点，认为是流亡异国者不得其所，故作此诗。

小雅·黄鸟鉴赏
《小雅·黄鸟》是诗人为苦难人民喊出的悲愤之声，写出流落异乡人的痛苦。不是天灾人祸，谁也不肯流落他乡。但命运使然，无可奈何。诗中的主人公在异乡遭到他人不友好的对待，心情很坏，当他看到黄鸟成群飞来，啄食自己辛苦种下的粮食时，一股怨气便从中而出。其实，他心里愤恨的是经常欺负、歧视他的当地人，是拿这些黄雀作比而已。
此诗与《魏风·硕鼠》一起展示了古代社会的一个现实：硕鼠为患家园，黄鸟做恶他乡。非但乐土天国无处可求，就连此邦之人，也是“不我肯谷”、“不可与明”，甚至“不可与处”。这些背井离乡的人在异乡遭受剥削压迫和欺凌，更增添了对邦族的怀念，“言旋言归”，“复我邦族”，还是返回故土吧！虽然不能逃避硕鼠、黄鸟、恶人，但或许还能在和亲人的依傍中寻求些许暖意，给这充满伤痛的心以解脱的慰藉和沉醉。
全诗三章往复加强，不断地对黄鸟进行控诉，不断地对当地人进行批评，批评他们不能善待异乡人，不能进行心对心的交流，不能和平共处；不断地表达着快快回到亲人身旁的愿望。
听着这来自远古的动人心魄、直冲云霄的愤怒悲恸的呼声，就连今天的人也禁不住为这位生活于乱离之世的诗人的不幸遭遇洒一掬同情之泪了。文学是活的社会生活与心灵体验的历史，《小雅·黄鸟》这首诗，正是春秋末叶社会政治腐败、经济衰退、世风日下之坏乱景象的一个极具典型意义的缩影。作者在这里所要表达的是一种不堪忍受剥削和压榨的愤怒和对世道人心的彻底绝望。
在立意方面，这首诗与《魏风·硕鼠》有异曲同工之妙：即以“啄我之粟”的黄鸟发端，类比起兴，以此影射“不可与处”的“此邦之人”，既含蓄生动，又表现了强烈的爱憎感情。
