译文
记得那年那个夜晚，我与谢娘在临水的池塘边的花丛下初次相遇。画帘低垂，携手暗自约定相会的日期。不忍别离，又不得不分手。
不知不觉残月将尽，清晨的莺语已经响起。分手，从此就失掉了音讯。如今都成了异乡人，想见面恐怕更没有机会了。
注释
谢娘：晋王凝之妻谢道韫有文才，后人因称才女为“谢娘”。唐·韩翃《送李舍人携家归江东觐省》诗：“承颜陆郎去，携手谢娘归。”
水堂：临近水池的堂屋。
相期：相约会。李白《月下独酌》：“永结无情游，相期邈云汉。”
残月，谓将落的月亮。唐·白居易 《客中月》诗：“晓随残月行，夕与新月宿。” 宋·柳永《雨霖铃》词：“今宵酒醒何处？杨柳岸、晓风残月。” 陈毅《过微山湖》诗：“鲁南峰影嵯峨甚，残月扁舟入画图。”
音尘：消息。隔音尘，即音信断绝。
因：缘由，这里指机会。

荷叶杯·记得那年花下创作背景
这首词有特殊的写作背景，韦庄的爱姬被蜀主王建所夺，韦庄创作这首词，就是回忆以前的欢乐，诉说此后的痛苦。又传说韦庄的爱姬读了这首词后，因痛苦而绝食而死。

此词上片以极通俗的语言，写极欢乐的爱情。“记得”二字，直贯而下。“深夜”是相会的时刻；“水堂西面”的“花下”是相会的地方；“画帘垂”照映深夜人静，“携手”句写两情相投。一个“花下”“深夜”的镜头，把词人的思绪，推回到遥远的过去。“水堂”“帘垂”“携手”“相期”，低低切切，耳鬓厮磨，情深爱笃，是十分美好的回忆。过去的欢情写得愈热烈，此时的心情就显得愈凄凉，不言悲而悲转浓，不言愁而愁益深，这就是所谓“以乐景而写悲”的艺术手法。
下片以无限的惆怅，写无限的离恨。“晓莺”承“花下”；“残月”承“深夜”；“相见更无因”承“携手暗相期”，句句有着落，层层有照应。歇拍三句，有景有情，以情为主。“晓莺残月”状离别的凄清环境。“从此”以下，为别后情状：人各一方，音信断绝，无由相见。
据说韦庄的爱姬被蜀主王建所夺，韦庄这首词，就是回忆以前的欢乐，诉说此后的痛苦，表达了对爱人刻骨的相思。又传说韦庄的爱姬读了这首词后，因痛苦而绝食而死。杨偍《古今词话》和蒋一葵《尧山堂外纪》记载：韦庄有宠姬，姿质艳丽，兼擅词翰，为蜀主王建所夺，于是作《荷叶杯》、《小重山》等词，词流入禁宫，姬闻之不食而死。据夏承焘《韦端己年谱》考定庄留蜀时，年已七十左右，故杨、蒋之记载不足信。但不管这种记载的真实可靠性如何，这首词倒确实是写得语淡而情悲，情意深长的。
