梁启超的《读陆放翁集》作于他一八九九年戊戌变法失败后出走日本期间，写的是读陆游诗集引起的感慨。这里所选的是其中一首。
诗的前两句从大处着笔，指出千百年来诗坛柔弱不振的总趋势。在这种柔媚纤弱的风气笼罩之下，那种刚健雄直的战斗性和勇于为国家献身的精神也消亡了。所谓「兵魂销尽国魂空」是「靡靡风」最突出的表现。作者格外强调这一点，乃在为下两句蓄势，抹倒「诗界千年」，正是为了突出一人。「集中十九从军乐」指诗题给出的《陆放翁集》。在「兵魂销尽国魂空」的「千年」诗界，唯有陆游的诗集里，十分之九都是抒写卫国从军的渴望和欢慰的。所以末句「亘古男儿一放翁」，使足笔力推崇陆游是从古至今的诗人中一个真正的男子汉。诗末梁启超自注云：「中国诗家无不言从军苦者，惟放翁则慕为国殇，至老不衰」，将诗意说得就更明确了。全诗写得极为概括凝练，雄直警策，这些都表现为「诗界千年」同「一放翁」的艺术对比所显示出的鲜明性。
梁启超格外推崇爱国主义和为国而战的「尚武精神」，他认为「中国人无尚武精神」，表现在诗里，则所谓「诗界千年靡靡风」，因而他倡导「诗界革命」，欲改造文学，振作民气，达到救国拯民的目的。这首诗可说是其发自心声之作。

梁启超（1873年～1929年），字卓如，一字任甫，号任公，又号饮冰室主人、饮冰子、哀时客、中国之新民、自由斋主人，汉族，广东新会人，清光绪举人，和其师康有为一起，倡导变法维新，并称“康梁”。是戊戌变法（百日维新）领袖之一、中国近代维新派代表人物，曾倡导文体改良的“诗界革命”和“小说界革命”。其著作合编为《饮冰室合集》。
