鲁恭为中牢令，重德化，不任刑罚。袁安闻之，疑其不实，阴使人往视之。随恭行阡陌，俱坐桑下。有雉过，止其旁，旁有儿童。其人曰：“儿何不捕之？”儿言雉方雏，不得捕。其人讶而起，与恭决曰：“所以来者，欲察君之政绩也。今蝗不犯境，此一异也；爱及鸟兽，此二异也；童有仁心，此三异也。久留徒扰贤者耳，吾将速反，以状白安。”

译文
鲁恭担任中牟县令，注重用道德感化百姓，不用刑罚的方式。朝中大官袁安听说这件事，怀疑它不是真的，暗地里（私下）派人到中牟县去视察。那人与鲁恭走在田间小路上，一起坐在桑树下。有一只野鸡经过，在他们旁边停下，旁边有一个小孩。那个人说：“你为什么不把它抓住？”那个小孩说野鸡还是幼鸡，不能抓。那人很惊讶，对鲁恭辞别说：“我此次前来，是要检查你的政绩的。蝗虫不犯县境，这是我看到的第一个现象；爱护鸟兽，这是第二个现象；小孩也怀有仁爱之心，这是第三个现象。我久留只会打扰贤者。我将快速返回，把情况报告袁安。”

范晔（公元398年—公元445年），字蔚宗，南朝宋史学家，顺阳（今河南淅川南）人。官至左卫将军，太子詹事。宋文帝元嘉九年（432年），范晔因为“左迁宣城太守，不得志，乃删众家《后汉书》为一家之作”，开始撰写《后汉书》，至元嘉二十二年（445年）以谋反罪被杀止，写成了十纪，八十列传。原计划作的十志，未及完成。今本《后汉书》中的八志三十卷，是南朝梁刘昭从司马彪的《续汉书》中抽出来补进去的。其中《杨震暮夜却金》已编入小学教材，《强项令》选入中学教材。
