励精图治的典故

公元前74年，汉昭帝刘弗陵死去。他没有儿子，于是手握朝政大权的大司马大将军霍光立武帝的曾孙刘询为帝。这就是汉宣帝。

公元前68年，霍光病死。御史大夫魏相根据历史教训和霍氏家族的专权胡为，建议宣帝采取措施，削弱霍氏权力。霍氏对魏相极度怨恨和恐惧，便假借太后命令，准备先杀魏相，然后废掉宣帝。宣帝得知此事后，先发制人，采取行动，将霍氏满门抄斩。

从此以后，汉宣帝亲自处理朝政，振作精神，力图把国家治理得繁荣富强。他直接听取群臣意见，严格考查和要求各级官员；还降低盐价，提倡节约，鼓励发展农业生产。魏相领着百官尽职，很符合汉宣帝的心意。汉宣帝在魏相的配合下，采取了一系列有利于发展生产，减轻人民负担的有效措施，终于使国家兴旺发达起来。他在位二十五年使已经衰落的西汉王朝出现了中兴的局面。
