东汉末年，曹操率军先后消灭董卓、黄巾军、吕布、袁术、袁绍、刘表等地方势力，控制北方领土。袁绍的儿子投奔北方的乌桓，53岁的曹操亲率大军彻底征服20万乌桓人，凯旋后作《步出夏门行》：“老骥伏枥，志在千里。烈士暮年，壮心不已。”
