东晋时期，佛教学者支道林结交王羲之、谢安等名士。他们经常在一起谈论玄理，研究《庄子》。《庄子》是战国时期庄周写的一部哲学经典著作。晋代的向秀和其后的郭象两人完成了对《庄子》的注释。《庄子》的第一篇《逍遥游》是这本书最深奥难懂的地方。当时，许多名士都曾深入研究这篇文章标新立异的意思，但都不能超出郭象和向秀的见解。支道林曾经在白马寺和冯太常一起聊天，谈到《逍遥游》时，他提出了一种比郭象和向秀的见解更为全新的看法，也与当时众多名士的观点迥然不同。支道林的这些见解都是众多名士苦苦思索而不能够想明白的。后来，人们在解释《逍遥游》时也就借鉴了支道林的这些观点。
