贾宝玉因丢失通灵宝玉而生病，贾母与王熙凤商量要把薛宝钗嫁给宝玉来冲喜，这样来挽救宝玉的生命。刚好此时贾政放了外任，贾母命他定夺。贾政也想这个恨铁不成钢的儿子早日康复，成家立业好继承祖业，也同意立即就办喜事。
