阶下囚的典故

三国演义中的原文：

方操送宫下楼时，布告玄德曰：“公为坐上客，布为阶下囚，何不发一言而相宽乎？”玄德点头。及操上楼来，布叫曰：“明公所患，不过于布；布今已服矣。公为大将，布副之，天下不难定也。”操回顾玄德曰！“何如？”玄德答曰：“公不见丁建阳、董卓之事乎？”

“阶下囚”和“座上客”皆出现于《三国演义》第十九回。吕布兵败为曹操所获，以绳索于白门楼上。吕布见曹操身边座有刘备，贪生念起，并希望刘备念旧情以救之，说：“公为座上客，布为阶下囚，何不发一言而相宽乎？”

阶下囚原意：台阶下被束困的囚犯。形容在失败之后身败名裂，并成为众矢之的狼狈不堪状。
