公元1125年，金军大举南下进攻北宋，燕京守将郭药师投敌，黄河守将梁方平脱逃，直逼北宋都城东京，宋徽宗将帝位传给儿子宋钦宗赵桓，自己逃到镇江。大臣杨时上书说：“大敌当前必须振奋精神抗击金人入侵，如果萎靡不振就只有灭亡。”
